The ancient Olinthos

The ancient Olinthos

The ancient Olynthos, the most important political centre of Chalkidiki at the classic season, is developed in two hills: the Southern Hill is occupied by the city that the Votiaioi founded in the 7th century B.C. and was destroyed by the Persians in 479 B.C. In the Northern hill the classic city was extended, built according to the Ippodamio urban planning system, with parallel avenues and vertical to them streets that create a system of regular building squares (87 x 35m.). Characteristic is the type of the Olynthian residence with the "bridal champer" at the north of the internal courtyard and the rooms and the auxiliary spaces well-ordered around it, while the mosaics of the "men" should be particularly reported, as they are from the oldest known of the classic season. The first excavations were realised by the professor D. M. Robinson and the American Faculty of Classic Study during 1928-1938. From 1992 the program of restoration and appointment of settlement of Northern Hill is applied, from "IST' E.P.K.A.
