According to the tradition the village took its name from its first resident that came from Chania of Crete and was installed in the old village that is found in the hinterland of Kassandras, in the South of the current village and in a distance of about 2,5 kilometres. The village was transported in its current place in 1930 after an earthquake that caused absolute destruction. The region is full of springs and rich vegetation. The beautiful beach of Haniotis is a pole of attraction for thousands of visitors every year.
