Ierisos

The city of Ierissos was rebuilt in 1937 after a destructive earthquake that caused irreparable damage to the old city on 26 September 1932. Today it has 3.000 residents. The protector of the city is Virgin Maria whose memory is celebrated each year on 8 September in the church that has her name. The city is wetted by the sea and has a sandy beach of 6 km length with unique beauty and clean waters. In Ierissos are the ruins of the ancient city Akanthos and its cemetery contains a lot of archaeological discoveries. Other monuments are the Byzantine castle in the Krouna, the ruins of the castle in Kotsaki and the ruins of the monasterial property of Xiropotamos. After the earthquake the church of Saint Dimitrios suffered serious damage and today is a preservable monument.
