How to visit...

Visiting the Saint Mountain is allowed, according to the Formal of the monastic state, only to men.

The visitors have to telephone in the offices of the Saint Mountain a few days before their visit , in Thessalonica (Tel. 2310- 833733 or 861611, Fax 861811) in order to reserve and take a code number. This number is essential once the number of visitors (120) that is allowed per day is limited .
The visitors can go by road (with their car or with bus) from Thessalonica to Ierissos, New Roda or Ouranoupoli. The way is about 140 kilometres. The cities are touristic, which means that there exist all types of shops, hotels but also parking areas for the cars. (The only cars that are allowed in the Saint Mountain are those of the abbeys and the workers that work there). So the visitors will have to leave their cars in the city.
Before the visitors leave for the Saint Mountain they should in any case obtain their residence licence. This is done in Ouranoupolis, in the offices of the Saint Mountain (on the right of the harbour). There should the visitors be at least one hour before the departure.
To get the residence licence you need to demonstrate your police identity and 15 Euros.

Specifically for the visitors from another country they also need:
A testimonial from the embassy of their country in Athens or from the corresponding consulate of Thessalonica.
An entry licence from the Ministry of Abroads of Athens (Address of Ecclesiastical Affairs) or from the Ministry of Nothern Greece of Thessalonica (Address of Exterior Affairs). < br>Passport.
