Karies

Dafni is the main gate of the Saint Mountain. It is found in the middle of the western coast of the peninsula and is a small group of buildings, basis of the Police Department, the Customhouse, Telecommunacation organizations and the Post. There also exist shops of foods, wares of Saint Mountain's art, restaurant, hostel.

The monk Moysis wrote characteristically about Dafni:
Dafni with the laurels and the small harbour, the boats, the ships, the two cafes, the shops with the souvenirs…
You will always pass from Dafni, in order to go to the monasteries.It welcomes you simply, it waits for every one, whoever he is , showing him the street of ascenting… Dafni will always show the street of ascenting…
< BR > Karyes (alt. 370 m.), a strange small graphic market town, is the capital of Saint Mountain, basis of the 'First', the Holy Supervision, the Holy Synagogue and the political governor of the region. It is also basis of the Police Department, the Community Clinic, Office of Telecommunications and Post. They are found in the centre of the peninsula, in a beautiful region with view to the Eastern coasts and the Aegean. It is a group of houses of the twenty abbeys of the Saint Mountain, laboratories, small shops of foods, wares of Saint Mountain's art, hostels and restaurants. The most impressive buildings of Karyes is the building of offices of the Holy Community and the 'Primary place'(Protato). < BR > 'Protato' (10th century) is the most ancient temple of the S.Mountain, dedicated to the assumption of Virgin Mary. It is almost a square three-column Royal, in which two narthexes were added. The temple is marble.
In the Holy Step is kept the renowned miraculous icon of Virgin Mary "Axion Esti", the Virgin Mary of the Saint Mountain.
In the 'Protato' in 1821 the leader of the fight in Macedonia Emm. Papas with the abbots and a lot of monks officially declared the Revolution.
