Monastery of Megisti Lavra

Monastery of Megisti Lavra

It was built in 963 from Osio Athanassio of the mount Athos with money that were offered by the emperors Nikiforos Fokas and Ioannis Tsimiskis. In all ten centuries of its life, it maintained the first place between the other institutions of the Saint Mountain, so much because of the wealth as well as the heirlooms that have been kept there ( manuscripts, historical documents, portable icons, etc).
It is a monumental unit that is composed of building groups of big size. The central (Catholic) temple in the centre about of the Abbey includes also two big chapels, the Forty Saint martyrs and Saint Nikolaos. In the yard are also found the lunchroom, two big temples, the cookroom, the library etc. In the four cords that surround the buildings are found the cells of the monks, the hostels, the chapels e.t.c.
The Abbey is dwelled by about 50 monks, that daily deal so much with their solitary duties (liturgies, praying, etc) as with the hospitality and service of tens of visitors from all over the world.
The Abbey remains open all the days of the year from the sunset to the sundown. The access at the winter months becomes with difficulty. For a work visit (study, photographing, etc) is required a previous agreement so much with the 10th revenue service of Byzantine Antiquities as with the Abbey itself.
