Monastery of Iviron

Monastery of Iviron

Third in importance among the twenty Abbeys of the Saint Mountain, it was built in the end of the10th entury by the Georgians(Iberians) Monks Ioannis and Ethimios, at the area where in older days existed the Abbey of Klimentos. As well as other Abbeys, it met a big development in the 16th century and important pictorial works were executed at this season (catholic murals etc)
Built next to the sea, it is surrounded by the four transepts in shape of a rectangle. In the centre is found the central temple, that is dated from the season of the founders (10th century) as well as the two important for their history chapels, of Virgin Mary Portaytissa and Prodromos. The biggest part of the wings was reconstructed in the place of older buildings in the 19th century.
A many membered solitary Confraternity is commited to the re-establishment of devastated buildings that surround the Abbey, and at the same time with the hospitality of the pilgrims and the care of many scientists that come from all over the world for the study of the historical wealth of the Abbey.
The Abbey celebrates in the 15th of August -the Assumption of Virgin Mary - (28th of August according to the New Calendar) and the celebration takes place every year with particular brilliance. Crowds of people rush also for the legendary miracles of Virgin Mary.
