Monastery of Koutloumousi

Monastery of Koutloumousi

group of buildings of rectangle form with relatively spacious courtyard, in the centre of which is raised the central (catholic) temple. The bank was built in our days (1995), while the small temple - building of 16th century - is covered with five domes and has a glass fenced narthex.
The initial Abbey is dated before the 12th century but also in the 14th century the abbot of Graces from Imbros cared for the growth of Abbey Koutloumousiou. Big fires but also landslips created enormous problems during the life of the Abbey.
Apart from the murals of the catholic that are dated in the middle of the 16th century, the abbey has more than 600 manuscripts, simple and pictorial. Also it has an important historical file and a big number of printed books.
The Abbey is dwelled by a many membered fraternity that fights to restore its right operation, after the fire of 1981, parallel with the hospitality and the service of the pilgrims.
