The Abbey is found in the middle of the peninsula of Athos, in the street from Dafni to Karyes and is dedicated to the 40 witnesses. The Catholic of the Abbey has been reconstructed in 1783. the Abbey owns enough chapels and a few cells.
The Abbey was founded in the end of the 10th century probably by the monk Pavlos Xiropotaminos and thrives until the beginning of Fragkokratia when the piratical raids begin. After the Byzantine period it is strengthened economically by the dynasty of Palaiologous as well as by Serb souvereigns. After the fall of Byzantium, the Turkish raids as well as two big fires in 1507 and 1609, inflict very heavy hurts in the Abbey.
From the rich collection of heirlooms in the Abbey the most distinguishable are the biggest in the world piece of the Honest Timber and the disk of Poulheria.
The library of the Abbey contains about 400 manuscripts and roughly 4.000 books.
In the abbey is installed a fraternity of 30 monks.
