The Abbey is found above the mountain, on a slope of the southwestern part of the peninsula and is dedicated to Saint George. The Catholic of the Abbey is the newest building of the beginning of the last century and is of Saint Mountain's type. The Abbey has eight chapels inside and outside of it. Two laboratories in Karyes and the cell of Metamorphosis also belong in the Abbey.
The Abbey was founded, according to the tradition, in the 1st century from three brothers, Moysis, Aaron and Ioannis from Ahrida. After the Byzantine period, the Abbey got destroyed by Catalans pirates, but was reconstructed thanks to the aid of the Paleologous, as well as of the souvereigns of countries bordering on the Danube. Even though initially in the Abbey there were apart from Bulgars, Greeks and Serbs, since 1845 only Bulgars dwell there.
Apart from two miraculous icons of Saint George and two others of Virgin Mary the 'Standing' and the 'Epakouousa', the Abbey also possesses and other heirlooms and ecclesiastical utensiles. The library of the Abbey contains 126 Greek and 388 Slavic manuscripts, as well as over 8.000 books.
In the abbey is installed a fraternity of 15 monks.
