Monastery of Dohiario

Monastery of Dohiario

It is one of the most elegant and most beautiful monasteries of Saint Mountain, next to the sea. The group begins from the refectory (old and new) and finishes in the tallest point in a tall tower that dominates the space. Proportionally high is also the catholic that raises above the walls of the older temple.
The Abbey was founded in the second half of the 10th century and is attributed to Efthimios, student of Osios Athanassios of Lavra. In the middle of the 16th century (1568) the catholic Temple and the refectory were built and pictorialized. The mural of the refectory is dated in 1676 and 1700 (northern department).
Apart from the murals of the 16th century, in the catholic there are also the murals of the 18th century that adorn the outer narthex and copy with great success the murals of the 14th century from other monuments. Remarkable is also the library of the Abbey, where apart from the very important historical documents, there are also kept more than 400 manuscripts.
The Abbey is dwelled by an active fraternity, which sees to its various needs. The hospitality of the scientists and pilgrims is a fact.
