Monastery of Karakalo

The abbey is found between the Abbeys of Biggest Lavras and Iberia, at a slope near the sea and is dedicated to the apostles Petros and Pavlos. In the fort grounds of the Abbey is the Catholic, of Athonian type, of the middle of the 16th century and was wall painted in the beginning of the 18th century. The Abbey has seven chapels, four cells in Karyes and fourteen in the forest northwest from it.
The Abbey refers to documents of 1018 and 1087. In the 13th century it was completely depopulated, but was renovated by the emperors Andronjkos the B' and Ioannis the E' Palaiologos. Afterwards, it got attacked by pirates and Latins. In the 16th century it was completely destroyed and was rebuilt thanks to the aid of souvereigns from Moldovlahia.
In the Abbey there are kept a lot of portable pictures, holy heirlooms and ecclesiastical utensiles. The library of the Abbey contains 279 manuscripts and about 2.500 books.
In the abbey is installed a fraternity of 25 monks.
