Monastery of Filotheou

Monastery of Filotheou

A little upper the Abbey Karakalos, in a plateau is found the Abbey Filotheou, in a distance of about 2,5 hours from Karyes, and is dedicated to the Eyaggelismos of Virgin Mary. The catholic is built a little before the middle of the 18th century and got wall painted after the middle of the 18th century. The abbey has nine chapels and thirteen cells, one of which is found in Karyes.
The Abbey is founded in the last fourth of the 10th century, but hardly in the end of the 11th it takes the form of a monastery. In the end of the 13th and 14th century it is strengthened economically by the Byzantine emperors and the Serb souvereigns. In the post byzantine years, souvereigns of countries bordering on the Danube offer to the Abbey serious economic help. In 1871, the Abbey, with exception to the Catholic, the Refectory and the Library, is burned entirely.
The Abbey has a lot of heirlooms, bones of Saints and mainly the miraculous icon of Virgin Mary the 'Sweetkisser'. In the library exist 250 manuscripts and lots of books.
In the Abbey is installed a fraternity of 50 monks.
