Monastery of Simonos Petras

Monastery of Simonos Petras

The seven-floor Abbey of Simonos Petras is the most daring building of Saint Mountain and is built on a steep rock in the southwest side of the peninsula and is dedicated to the Birth of Christ. Its name emanates from its founder, the holy Simona, that lived in the Saint Mountain in the 14th century . The Catholic of the Abbey was built after the last fire and is not wall painted. The Abbey has 15 chapels and five cells in Karyes.
In the end of the 16th century, the Abbey was burned entirely, rebuilt and reburned in the beginning of the 17th century. Then begins a period of decline that is interrupted by short periods of recovery. In the end of the last century the Abbey was burned entirely and rebuilt with fund raisers by Russia.
From heirlooms, the Abbey has a piece of Honest Timber, bones of saints and various other heirlooms. The library was remarkable up to the last fire now it has only a few newer manuscripts and few books.
In the abbey is installed a fraternity of 60 monks.
