Monastery of Stavronikita

Monastery of Stavronikita

It is one of the smallest Abbeys of Saint Mountain, but with traditional architecture and the catholic in the centre, lots of chapels and a built aquaduct, that transfers water to the Abbey. South of the catholic is raised the fort tower, while round the Abbey are lots of auxiliary buildings.
It was built by Patriarch Ieremia the A' in 1540, in the place of an older Abbey, that already existed in the beginning of the 11th century. In the works of the Patriarch is included so much the catholic with its murals, as the refectory and the chapel of Prodromos with their murals. Newer repairs were made in the 18th century and in our days.
It has a rich library with rare pictorial handwritten books. Apart from the murals of the catholic and the refectory, there is the icon of the Saint Nikolaos, which is one of the rare pieces of this type.
In the last years the Abbey has been renovated almost entirely from the Archaeological Organization.
It is dwelled by a big and active solitary Fraternity, which sees to the maintainance of the buildings but also the accommodation of pilgrims and scientists.
