Monastery of Esfigmenou

Monastery of Esfigmenou

It is found next to the sea and consists of a rectangle surrounding fence, which creates a relatively spacious courtyard. In the centre is the Catholic and perimetrically are paraded the wings with the cells of the fathers, the spaces of hospitality and the refectory. The refectory is found westwards of the catholic and is attached to the western wing.
An Abbey with the name Abbey of Esfigmenou already existed from the 10th century and it appears that it flourished. It was depopulated many times by piratical raids but acquired important force after the 18th century. The catholic was built in 1810 in the place of an older temple that was demolished, while the wall painting was made by the Galatsanous painters in 1811 and 1818. Older building of the Abbey is the refectory that maintains murals of the 16th -17th century.
Apart from the catholic and the refectory the Abbey has a very good collection of Byzantine and post Byzantine icons, from which distinguishes the mosaic picture of Christ. The library includes many and rare manuscripts, from which distinguishes the one with number 14 for its infrequent micrographies.
The Abbey is dwelled by a powerful solitary fraternity and constitutes an example of powerful attachment to the Saint Mountain's tradition.
