The Abbey is built in an inlet , near the Abbey Xenofondas from the side of the Siggitikos gulf and is dedicated to the homonym Saint. The Abbey gives the impression of a small state with its many-floored buildings and the tall domes of the temples. The Catholic was built in the beginning of the 19th century and has murals of Russian art. The Abbey has 15 chapels and 5 cells, 2 of which are in Karyes. The Abbey also has the monastery of Hromitsas, the Skete of Carpenter or Virgin Mary, New Thivayda or Gournoskiti and Palaiomonastiro.
In the 13th century the Abbey was burned and its reconstruction was strengthened economically by Andronikos B' Palaiologos and Serb souvereigns. Periods of acme were interchanged with periods of poverty for the abbey. The monks were Greeks and Russians. In the 18th century the Abbey came back in Greek hands and in 1875 the Russians prevailed again.
In the Abbey are kept lots of portable pictures and a crowd of heirlooms .The library of the Abbey contains 1320 Greek manuscripts, 600 Slabian and above 20.000 Greek and Russian books.
In the abbey is installed a fraternity of 40 monks.
