| Skete of St. Anna |
The Skete of Theopromitoros of Saint Anna is the biggest and most ancient of the Mount Athos.
< br > It belongs to the Abbey of Biggest Layra and has been characterized as the "Holy Step" of Athon's Holy Temple, as is called the region from the New Skete to the Katounakia and the Karaoulia.
< br >It was founded in the 14th century by the Osio Gerontio, near the sea
in the place that the cell of Saint Eleftherios is found today, and was destroyed from frequent piratical raids.
For this reason the monks with leader the Osio Gerontio were transported in the mountain, creating initially huts and then Cells.
< br >
It is built in the south-western side of Athos on a steep side with the highest hut built
on an altitude of 450 metres and the lowest in the level of the sea.
< br > Via the settlement, in an altitude of 320 metres is Kiriako,
the central metropolitan temple of the skete.
The Skete of Saint Anna is the biggest of Mount Athos ,bigger than most of the Abbeys .The monks are about seventy - and there are 62 huts.
< br > The 51 of them are adorned with the characteristic Skitiotiko Naidro, and only 31 of them are dwelled .Because of the steep ground the transport is made through cobbled roads, most of which are very dangerous for animals and people, taking into account that the majority of the transport of people and goods is made with the help of mules.
