Timiou Prodromou (Lavreotiki)

Timiou Prodromou (Lavreotiki)

The Rumanian skete Saint Ioannis the Baptist belongs to the holy abbey of Biggest Lavras. It is found between the Kafsokalidia and the Biggest Lavra, on a rocky and low hill. Until the middle of the 19th century it was a Greek cell. In 1857 it was sold in two Rumanian monks, Nektarios and Niphon. After this it was recognized as a skete. It is lived by 25 monks of Rumanian origin and follows the commune concept of monastic life. The skete follows the architectural style of monasteries of Athos, which means that its buildings shape a rectangle that surround a courtyard. In the centre of the courtyard is the catholic (central church, which was dedicated to the christening of Christ. Kiriakon was built in 1866 and was dedicated to Saint Ioannis the Precursor. In this church is found the admired picture of Virgin Mary that according to the fable was not made from the hand of a person. Someone can also find there the bones of many Saints. In its library exist 130 manuscripts and 5000 printed books, most of which are in the Rumanian language.
