The historical Holy Monastery of Ano Xenias is found in the north-eastern slopes of Othryos, the mountain that separates Magnesia from Fthiotida, in an altitude of about 500 metres. It is found 60 kilometres from Volos and 25 from Almyros.
It has to present a long history. The historians support that the foundation of the Monastery should be placed in the 10th century.
It suffered many destructions. First can be considered its setting on fire from Cardinal Pelagio in 1213, and the killing of 800 people, according to the tradition of its monks. During the Ottoman domination there were two destructions. As a last wound we can consider the devastating earthquake in 1980, that caused very serious damage to the Catholic, like cracks in the walls, detachments of the wall paintings, etc, as well as the collapse of all the old buildings that had been repaired after the fire in 1942.
