Kostos

Across the road that links Paroikia with Lefkes, in the 7th km we come across with the church of Saint Pacus (17th century). From the intersection, after following a sloping road one mile east, we reach the village Kostos which is built in 160m height. It is a small Cycladic village with white houses, picturesque streets and hospitable residents. Its name comes from the Latin word custodia (=guard, watch) and it is because of its geographic position which ensures a panoramic view of the area. The foundation of the village is reported in the age of Inveteracy. The village has two beautiful churches. The church of Saint Panteleimon is a building of the 17th century, it has an impressive woodcut icon screen and remarkable icons like Panagia of Passion (1676). The church of Saint Marina was renovated in 1644, according to a relevant source that was found to the southern wall of the temple. Athanasios the Parian: the village of Kostos is the birthplace of the great teacher of the Nation, Athanasios the Parian (1722-1813) who was one of the strongest spiritual and ecclesiastic figures of modern Hellenism. He was taught his first lessons in the village's school and in the monastery of Saint Athanasios, in Naousa. Later, in the age of 20, he went to Smyrna where he studied in the eminent Evangelic School. He continued his studies in the academy of Athonias and later on he attended lessons of philosophy, physics and rhetoric. He earned his living by working as a preacher. He taught in Mesologgi, Thessaloniki, Agio Oros and Chios, simultaneously he was an author. He was a positive and honest man, characterised by his simplicity, asceticism and generosity. South of the temple the house where he was born is preserved while in the entrance of the village there is his statue.
