National Park of Olympus

National Park of Olympus

OLYMPUS, our highest mountain, the residence of the twelve gods of antiquity, was declared as National Park in 1938. It is the first region, for which was applied 50 years ago, a special arrangement of protection in our country. This was made in order to protect the natural environment of the area, the wild flora, fauna, as well as its cultural values. Still, the nomination of the Forest was made aiming at the reinforcement of the scientific research parallel with the environmental education of the public and the growth of tourism in the wider region. Olympus is worldwide known so much for its ecological characteristics and its unprecedented natural beauty, as for its relation with the ancient Greek mythology. The importance of the Park has been recognized not only in Greece, but also in Europe and worldwidely. In 1981 UNESCO nominated Olympus as "Reserve of the Biosphere". In our regions, that are protected with a special legislation from the Ministry of Agriculture, are included 19 more Aesthetic Parks and Preservable Monuments of Nature.
