Panagouda

Panagouda

The temple of Panagoudas is found southern and adjacent to the road Egnatias and westwards the temple Savior. It is a new building, without special architectural interest, but is connected with the history of the city of newer years. In 1817 the temple was destroyed completely by a fire and were burned heirlooms of unique value, ecclesiastical books and icons. Was rescued however an eminent "epitaph" of the 14th century, that is found in the Byzantine Museum of Athens. In 1819 it was repaired. During the Ottoman domination, the temple of Panagoudas was a monastery of Mount Athos (before 1789) and - for a period - had under its jurisdiction and the small temple of Metamorphosis of the Savior.
